Problem in understanding of a sentence

Wurfel [1] has mentioned that producing electrical energy through photovoltaic means using solar cells is analogous to photosynthesis of algae where in high quality energy can be produced directly from solar energy without the need of the plant.

I don't know the meaning of this "where in high quality energy" and "means using solar cells". I know the meaning of each word but I have problem in the meaning of whole sentence.
