Please explain the text from a famous English novel "Goodbye Mr Chips" by James Hilton in simple English,giving special attention to the text in inverted commas.

"A decent career, decently closed:three cheers for old Chips,they all shouted,at that uproarious end-of-term dinner."

"Three cheers, indeed;but there was more to come, an unguessed epilogue, an encore played to a tragic audience."

And please explain the expression "assiduous teaching".

A decent career - Mr Chips had been a good and honest teacher in his teaching life.

decently ended - no problems, no scandals, no troubles - a neat and clean end to a career.

The boys all like Mr Chips so during the dinner at the end of term, when they are excited and happy and noisy, they all cheer Mr Chips = give a loud shout of approval.

#2 In the second half of the book, the story tells how Mr Chips returns to teaching when war breaks out and his reactions to the tragic deaths of boys and masters in the war. This sentence is referring forward to these.
