Pronunciation of says and said in modern English

I have always pronounced the verb form "says" and "said" as [sed], but in some audio coursebooks the speakers say [seid]. What's the most common way to pronounce these words, the standard English pronunciation?

The standard way is [sez] and [sed].

There are some regional variations, but most speakers follow Jutfrank.
