Hello,
Could anyone please tell me what the use of verb+ing in the underlined part is?
As children enter adolescence, they start spending too much time on the internet, pursuing educational and social activities.

I meant how the whole underlined part would be like if we didn't want to use verb +ing form?

The underlined part of your sentence is a present participle phrase.

"pursuing educational and social activities" acts as an adjective which modifies "time".

As children enter adolescence, they start spending too much time on the internet, during which (time) they [STRIKE]pursued[/STRIKE] pursue educational and social activities.
I'm sure this was a simple typo.
Since this is a habitual action, or a general truth, it's written in the simple present tense.
