"qt." as in "1 qt. of onion"

Dear sir,

I would appreciate it if you could explain what "qt." in a receipe means.
I think it's short for quantity, how much is 1 qt.?

It normally means 'quart', which is two pints, but I'm not sure how that would work with onions, so it might mean 1/4. ;-)

Actually the item was oysters.
