Learning a language is, I think, about learning to recognize patterns and about learning to be alert to inflections. It is also about acquiring good habits.

Language is a knowledge and also your asset that no one can snatch it away. Every word is worth tons of gold in time of need ( Chinese old saying ) :)

Good habits help- but the main aim is to communicate. The learner who is willing to try new things and to change things that don't work is the most effective learner. It's not just a list of rules in abook. It's a living thing- them embodiment of entire cultures and, as whl626 says, words are worth so much when you need them. ;-)
