IMO, the error is with "they". This is a plural pronoun used to refer to a singular child. There are many today who would argue that this use of a plural pronoun, when the gender of the antecedent is unknown, is correct, but, strictly speaking, it is not correct.

The best fixes for this sentence would be:

1. Rephrase it in the plural: Often, children like to be read to because they get the reader's full attention.

2. Use "he gets" instead of "they get".
