How can I explain this disease using simple English: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease?

I'm not a doctor, but I think this is a disease which cause stomach acids to go up into the oesophagus rather than staying in the stomach. Since the oesophagus is not built to withstand attack by these acids, it can, over time, become damaged by them.

A simple description:

The stomach acid rises into the gullet and feels as if it is burning it.

Thanks a lot. If I put it into conversation, how can make it simpler. 'oesophagus' and 'gullet' are difficult and formal words. Can I just use 'stomach tube' in the following sentences ?

No - you have to use words that are recognized for describing the body. Gullet is in fact the informal word for oesophagus.

"Stomach tube" implies a rube that is inserted into the stomach.

GAD is a disorder, not a disease. It happens when the valve between the gullet and the stomach become weak and no longer prevents the acid from rising up out of the stomach.
