You will see this sort of textspeak/chatlish all over the place these days (unfortunately!) It originally came about in order to help people get as much information as possible into standard text messages (SMS) - these used to be limited to 160 characters. However, you now see it in texts, emails, Facebook posts, tweets and, I'm told, in ill-advised school essays.
