I won´t refrain from doing the things I like such as getting a tan or talking with my friends in the sun just because the sun might cause harm to me.

Is the sentence OK? (or is REFRAIN too formal?)

It's fine, but something like 'stop' would be more common.;-)

It's a bit formal for matters involving sun burn. :D
