Sentence: "Not for once he tried to stop the media from spreading rumors"

My sentence/doubt: Is for once has been used correctly in this sentence ? Does it make the sentence wrong ?

Thanks

Is 'for once' used'...
Has 'for once' been used...

Yes, the sentence is correct.
Not for once he tried = he did not try at all

It needs something - has or had

It also needs something removed - the word 'for'. When you do something 'for once' you do it contrary to expectations or to established practice: For once he wasn't late implies [he was usually late - not once - as everyone expected - was he early]. His being early confounds that expectation.
