[Grammar] Regarding the usage of "s"

Sentence: "The public don't/doesn't care what happens to this investigation"

My question/doubt: Should the word "happen" , in the above sentence, have "s" at its end ? What if the words "the public don't" is replace by "We", then also, the word "happen" would have "s" at its end ?

Yes, "happens" is correct in both cases.
