Which of the following analysis is OK?

1) If it relies on its keen sense of smell, the meerkat is a successful forager.

or

2) Because it relies on its keen sense of smell, the meerkat is a successful forager.

"Meerkats feed mainly on insects, spiders and snails, but their diet occasionally includes small rodents, lizards, and the roots of certain plants. They will even tackle dangerous prey such as snakes and scorpions. Relying on its keen sense of smell, the meerkat is a successful forager."

They will even tackle dangerous prey such as snakes and scorpions.
What does "tackle" mean here when there are "preys" not "predators"?

They (the predators) will even risk an attack (a tackle) on dangerous prey (the animal(s) they are attacking).

"Preys" is the third person singular form of the verb "to prey". It's not used as a plural noun. The plural of "prey" (noun) is "prey".
