TASK
You have been asked to help your college to improve its facilities for helping college leavers with careers advice. Write a report for the new careers officer on any facilities that exist at present, assessing their usefulness and making recommendations for ways in which they could be improved.

My report...

Introduction

There are about 200 school leavers each year who should be given the best possible advice on their future careers. This indicates that they need well-presented, clear and up-to-date information on opportunities open to them. The aim of this report is to describe existing facilities, asses the best way of improving them and make recommendations for future action.

Existing Facilities

In the last 2 years, representatives from local companies have visited us and have provided us with information which is vital and has helped us to learn about real life. There are, also, weekly careers sessions after school run by a teacher. They are, however, inconvenient and few students attend them. They might show potential if the schedule of sessions changed.

With regard to the library, only 3 computers are available, though constantly in use which is very frustrating for students needing careers information. What is more, few careers books can be found in the library, most of which are out of date and as a result, not particularly helpful. The librarian is knowledgeable and well-suited for the job since she tries to provide good service. However, she often is very busy and not always available.

Comments and Recommendations

It is apparent that setting up connections with local firms enables students to learn about work and consequently make fewer mistakes when they come to choosing their career. I feel that the best way forward is to establish a formal system for advice because in this way the scheme will become an integral part of the school curriculum. In addition, students should be able to visit a company they are interested in which leads to them getting a better idea of what the job entails.

This school ought to look at ways of changing the currently library layout. I, also, recommend that the computers be linked to a job information database. The information should be presented as clearly and simply as possible, preferably with instructions on ways of contacting potential employers. This could provide a major resource for school leavers.

Thanks a lot in advance!

It is not clear to me whether the "school leavers" you refer to are graduates or dropouts. The alternatives for these two groups are different.

If they are dropouts, you should use that term in a Google search to look for programs and/or counseling available to them.

If they are graduates, surely the college should provide advice and should sponsor employer visitations.

Thank you very much!
The task refers to them as college leavers. That term was never my idea, so I just kind of went with it.
I should also mention that I'm sitting for the cambridge exams, so maybe a "leaver" is only a graduate in BE. I've no idea actually. But my book is in BE.

Again, thank you very much!

As noted by the other poster, it can be confusing what is meant by school leavers. It might be better to use a different term.

That should be:

(Nobody's perfect.)
