I am sending separately a cover letter and resume to both the president (Mr. Doe) and human resource executive (Ms. Smith) of a company and I am unsure how to properly address the cover letters and should cc: be used? As an example, should the cover letter be addressed singularly (Dear Mr. Doe with cc: Ms. Smith) or (Dear Mr. Doe and Ms. Smith) with no cc.

You should address the letter to one person only. So that person knows that a copy has gone to another person a cc is placed at the bottom of the letter after your signature.

Just reminding you that when you list Ms. Smith's name as a cc, also include her title:

cc: Ms. Jane Smith, Human Resources Manager

Then, when you mail her copy (in a separate envelope), put a small checkmark in front of the cc.
