How can I make the sentences below sound natural?

1. I borrowed a book from my classmate, but we forgot this thing until now. I haven't given her the book back yet.
2. I borrowed a book from my classmate, but we forgot about it. I haven't returned the book to her yet.

1. I borrowed a book from my classmate, but we forgot this thing until now.:cross: I haven't given her the book back yet.:tick:
2. I borrowed a book from my classmate, but we forgot about it. I haven't returned the book to her yet.:tick:
Number 2 is natural. The second sentence in number 1 is okay.

It would sound more natural to me if you said we both forgot, as the normal thing to say would be that you forgot.
