I would like to ask about the sentence "Rick heard voices a long way beneath him." For what situations can this sentence be used? For example is it valid for when Rick walking in the an ordinary pavement or could this only be used when Rick was in some elevation?

Indeed, he could be below ground level if the people talking were at a lower level.

I have found it in my notes. I have changed just the name into Rick because of I cannot know the source but it's probably a children's story.
