Dear Teachers, Please explain this. After the death of Banazir Bhuto, the ppp is riding on the sympathy wave. What does ride on the wave mean?

Thanks

Ride the wave means "to use something to achieve success."
In this case it means, that the PPP is using the people's sympathy to get votes.

It means that they are being carried towards their object (probably election) without having to make any serious effort. The 'wave', in this case public sympathy, is carrying them like a surfer on a surfboard.

The problem with such 'waves' is that they don't last.
