run-on sentence

Hi,

"The children were having so much fun, I hated to call them inside."


Is this a run-on sentence? (two independent clauses connect using comma, not coordinator, subordinator or correlative conjunctions). However, I think that the main sentence is :

The children were having so much fun that I hated to call them inside.

According to the above rule in the main sentence, Does this make any sense, and can we use it for exams like TOEFL, or IELTS?

Our teacher was so harsh and strict, students felt nervous and worried during the class.

Yes, you could link the clauses as you have shown at the end of your post to create a logical relation between them.

My internal editor wants to remove the juxtaposition of hated before a 'to-infinitive', preferring the use of a gerund. For example:

The children were having so much fun that I hated having to call them inside.
