Why is a "s" added to year in the sentence? What is the grammer meaning

David, for pedants of grammar and 'correctness' this is a very good example of a division in opinion.
A Thread from a few days ago was advising that the 's for year's would soon be obsolete and did not therefore warrant sufficient focus. But in reality, the 's for year's is only the tip of the apostrophic iceberg in relation to English grammar. If this rule is ignored, how many others will go the same way?
