I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct. Could I use the word "commiseration" in this sentence?

Samantha loved her husband but hated her in-laws because when she was diagnosed with breast cancer some years ago, they showed not a bit of commiseration.

It's not a word that is commonly used in connection with serious illness. I'd use "sympathy".
