I think that you could also express this idea in another way:

John's type of cellphone is the same as May's [type of cellphone is].

Here are two more examples of this kind of sentence from my

grammar books:

He is angry because my marks are the same as his [are].

Your schedule is not the same as mine [is].

This works; the two possessives balance, though I'd order it slightly differently:
John's cellphone is the same type as May's
