I have never really understood when people say "same difference". How is this correct? How can something be the same if it is different? I try to think about this but I just don't understand.

When I hear it, I always reply with "No its not. How can it be the same, yet different?"

It is an idiom, don't search for logic here :) It means 'no difference' simply.
I am not a teacher.

This is a bit confusing and colloquial phrase and is uttered when you agree that what you said was not exactly correct, but you think the difference is not important; as:
“Did you go by that bus?"
"Yes, actually it was a coach." "Same difference."
It means there's very little difference (=they are very similar)

See another example:
“She's my sister.”
“But you have earlier said that she is your stepsister”
“same difference.” (= It makes no difference for me.)
