Is "Save it" short for "Save your breath"?

Any other expressions?

Pat: Why didn't you wash the dishes, Sam? It's been three days.
Sam: Sorry. I have been busy.
Pat: Save your excuse for someone else / Save it. (i.e. I don't want to hear your excuse. I want you to wash the dishes.)

Other expressions
I don't want to hear it.
Whatever.
Tell someone who cares.
I'm not impressed.
Talk to the hand.

All the best, :D

==================
I got it from a book.
A wants to persuad B to continue playing music.
B wants to give it up and focus on study.
So B said "Save it."

In that case, 'it' refers to flattery, not to excuse:

A: You play X tune so very well! Would you play it?
B: Save it (i.e. Save your flattery for someone else. I really don't play that well. You're just trying to avoid studying, aren't you?)

All the best,

It could be short for save your breath, if it referred to something spoken. It can refer to saving other things, however.
