Hi,

Could anyone help me with the following sentence. I am not quite sure about its meaning.

BBC's self-declared responsibilities vis-a-vis the listening public were posited within the dictates of government influence, notwithstanding its occasional assertion to the contrary.

Thanks a lot.

Could you post the larger context from which this was taken? I'd only be guessing if I were to try to answer this. Though, it does appear to be an interesting question.

Did you get this from the internet or printed media?

The BBC got the idea that it had certain responsibilities when reporting the news to its listeners. The government had some influence on this idea, though the BBC in some way denies it from time to time (occasionally).

This is what I take this sentence to mean. Still, seeing it in a larger context would be helpful.
