Your sentence b. had two independent clauses separated by only a comma; that is not correct punctuation. You either have to use a semicolon, if you want to keep it as one sentence, or have two separate sentences.

I prefer separate sentences because "he found that" appearing twice in one sentence doesn't sound good. It doesn't sound much better in two sentences.

I would use the revised sentence a.
