(1) I felt regretful for what a foolish trick I had played on her,
so I called up my courage to apologize to her.

(2) I felt regretful, so I called up my courage to apologize to her
for what a foolish trick I had played on her.

Which is better, (1) or (2) ?

(3) On the contrary, she bursted into tears and lay her face dwonwards
the desk.

Is (3) acceptable ?

We rarely say "I feel/felt regretful". Usually, we would say "I regret/regretted", so your sentences would be:

1) I regretted the foolish trick I had played on her, so I plucked up the courage to apologise.

2) I regretted my actions, so I plucked up the courage to apologise to her for the foolish trick I had played [on her].

"To pluck up the courage" means to find the courage/bravery to do something.

Sentence 3 - the past of burst is burst! And we don't say "lay her face downwards on...."

On the contrary, she burst into tears and lay (or laid - both are possible for the past of "lay") her face down on the desk.
