[Grammar] sentences

Which of the following sentences is acceptable? Which one is preferable?

1. There was an earthquake happened last night at a remote village.

2. There was an earthquake last night in a remote village.

3. There was an earthquake hitting a remote village last night.

4. A huge earthquake hit a remote village last night.

2 and 4 are correct. I prefer 2 for written correspondence, as the word "huge" is rather informal and conversational, but 4 is fine for speech between friends.
