I'm not a teacher, but I will add that the three sentences given aren't necessarily all saying exactly the same thing. That might give you something to think about when trying to decide which is correct.

As a Brit, but not a teacher, I would explain that, whilst I believe all to be grammatically correct, they mean different things.

Changing "his" to "the" suggests that the coat concerned is not his but a coat that had previously been mentioned.
