You could add a subject and a verb, like this,
EX:
We went shopping for school supplies.
'shopping for school supplies' functions as the object of the verb 'went'.
You could also make the phrase into the subject by adding a verb and a complement, like this,
EX: Shopping for school supplies
is fun.
