As far as I know, if you don't know the gender of the person we don't use it but we use HE instead.....

Except for "identifier it":
"Look, it's Monica!"
"Who's there?" "It's us."

In older English, "it" can sometimes refer to a baby or child of unknown sex:
"In the next room a child began to cry; probably it had fallen down."

In more modern English we would probably try to recast the sentence.
