Flat and apartment are pretty much the same in our languagem, but I suspect that there are subtle nuances between them. Am I off the mark? Thanks.

Flat is mostly used in BE. We might say it is a big apartment with several rooms. In BE an apartment is considered a flat with just one bedroom.

One definition for both words though

a suite of rooms usually on one floor of an apartment house

In AE people use apartment for both. I think flat is seldom used.
