I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

Silence settled over the courtroom as the audience was waiting for the judge to pronounce the sentence.

There isn't usually an audience in a courtroom. There are legal professionals, the defendant, the jury, a stenographer and maybe some people in the public gallery. Even those in the public gallery aren't called the audience.

Silence settled over the courtroom as everyone waited for the judge to pronounce sentence.

(Note that "to pronounce sentence" is a set phrase and the article isn't necessary.)
