The following sentences are about what a short story is and the red parts are reallly confusing to me. Please help me.

1.Great writers can do in 600 words what a solid writer might manage in 1100.

3. Maybe at 500 words, the confinement begins to create a new form, often very interresting, but more of an intellectual exercise; literally showing off rather than a natural giving of truth.

A "solid writer" does not have the skills of a "great writer." Great writers take less words to express their thoughts, using better sentence structure and a more concise vocabulary.

Solid writers - those who are competent but not necessarily original - will need twice as many words to say something than are needed by an inspired writer.

With only 500 words to express something, the constraints start to produce a new form which is like an intellectual exercise, interesting but in the end a form of exhibitionism rather than natural self-expression.
