What is the source of your quote? It's ungrammatical. Who wrote it?

Don't expect song lyrics to be grammatical or even to make sense.

If a syllable needs filling in a song, then use the plural. Songs have needs that go beyond grammar.

I don't think songs ever need to go beyond grammar but they sometimes do, yes. This for me is bad songwriting.

I'd favour the needs of the tune over minor quibbles about grammar if I wrote music. ;-)

The writer of this song had similar views.

Good song! But that's exactly what I mean -- the choice of grammar is very conscious. It wouldn't work if it was Are you or are you not...?

Outrageous liberties are taken with rhymes, too. Here's a toe-curler:

'Even the days are bedder
Now that we are togedder.

Even the nights are brighder
Now that I'm here beside yer'.
