I am a teacher, theaching English in China. I have two students who both read and write english to pre intermediate level. My problem is theyre unwillingness to speak it. They both admit to being shy and one says that he is embarrassed to speak to me in english. They are both 16 years old, and will be taking TOEFL in the future. How do I get them to speak?
Help please

HI,..I think every English teacher encounters the same problem that most students are reluctant to practice their English, however their grammar are quite good.

You have to work harder by never stop motivating and encouraging students to practice,...Tell them that it is OK to make mistakes because every English learner faces the same thing,..Based on my experience, I always push my students to talk in English, if they talk in their native language I would pretend do not understand, then I say, " Sorry, what do mean, what language are you talking, please ?" and students will speak...:)

How much listening are they doing? The more listening they do, the more they will get to know the sounds and rhythms of English, which may help overcome this embarrassment.
