The translator, speaking in Japanese, also used his hands and arms tried to translate what I had said earlier.

is the above sentence correct?

No, not correct, this is my suggestion :

The translator is speaking in Japanese, he is also using his hands and arms to try to translate what I had just said .

You also have a run-on sentence. You need at least a semicolon here, or 'and', or start a new sentence.
