Re: idiom

Hi! Would you please explain the meaning of [STRIKE]this[/STRIKE] the phrase (no colon here) ''staring at a hand of patience''?
[STRIKE]I've[/STRIKE] I read it in a short story, in the sentence [STRIKE]:([/STRIKE] "I've found you sitting, staring at a hand of patience". [STRIKE].)[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]Thanx[/STRIKE] Thanks.

Do you know about the card game called "Patience"? It's a game for one person. It's sometimes called "Solitaire". The sentence means that the speaker found the other person sitting down and looking at the cards laid out on the table for a game of Patience.

Please tell us the title and the author of the short story you were reading.

Note my corrections to your post above. It's important to follow these rules of written English at all times:

- Start every sentence with a capital letter.
- End every sentence with one appropriate punctuation mark.
- Always capitalise the word "I" (first person singular).
- Do not put a space before a comma, full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Do not put a space after opening quotation marks.
- Do not put a space before closing quotation marks.

Re: idiom

And never use parentheses ("brackets" in BrE) to mark text you're writing about. That's what quotation marks or italics are for.

Re: idiom

ali98, ems wrote 'Please tell us the title and the author of the short story you were reading'.

I have asked you for this information in all your earlier threads so far. Why have you failed to provide it?
