"Legal formalities were continuing and the matter was still a while from court, he said." May I ask what "the matter was still a while" means?

The "matter" is the legal problem.

the matter was still a while from court means that the legal problem has not been formerly presented in the court. Still a while means that the matter will not be before the court in the near future. There are some legal formalities to be completed before the matter can go to trial.

Thank you so much.
