1 On the 20th of that month, Dr.Welch examined a Sick boy, Billy, and knew he had diphtheria, a deadly infectious disease mainly affecting children. The children of Nome would be helpless if it struck the town.

2 A huge snowstorm hit on February 1.

What's the difference between "struck" and "hit"? In my opinion, they are the same and can be switched each other.(if it hitthe town. A huge snowstorm struck on February 1.) Do you agree? Thank you!
