In each of the following questions, a related pair of words or phrases is followed by five lettered pairs of words or phrases. Select the lettered pair that best expresses a relationship similar to that expressed in the original pair.
STYGIAN : DARK

  1. Abysmal, low
  2. Cogent, contentious
  3. Fortuitous, accidental
  4. Reckless, threatening
  5. Cataclysmic, doomed
Stygian means extremely dark. So the relationship can be first one intense form of the second.
1.Abysmal means extremely bad/deep. This is clearly the intense form of low.
2.Cogent means clear and convincing, contentious means causing fight or argument. First is opposite of second.
3.Fortuitous means something good that happens by chance. Accidental also happens by chance but doesn't need to be good.
4.Not much relation between the words
5.Cataclysmic means large scale and violent. Doomed means likely to cause an unpleasant situation

By my analysis only 1 and 5 are close to the answer. But I prefer 1 because it gives the more literal relationship.

But answer given is 3. How?

Maybe the writer is thinking that the first word of the pair has a clearly positive or negative connotation and the second is neutral. That could possibly explain why 3. is given. If 'dark' can be seen as neutral.

If dark is neutral, I can also consider low and doomed as neutral.

I agree that low is neutral, but not doomed. I still think 1. is the best answer.
