Recently, I started reading English novels, and started enjoying it. I think it is a best suitable way to improve my language. The novels I read were written by the famous novelist Sidney Sheldon.

I like the novels for they talk about ambition, love, lust, survival, revenge, good and evil, trust versus distrust, struggling and success, and power, and his main casts are women.

I have read almost all his novels, and now started looking for the novels from other authors. But, I could find nothing. I mean, my friends suggested me some novels, but they talk about either *only* love or scientific, the subjects that do not interest me much.

Could you please suggest me some good novels?

Thanks in advance.

If you like Sidney Sheldon, then you'll also enjoy the novels written by Mary Higgins Clark. Very similar to Sheldon, lots of mystery, intrigue and a touch of romance as well.

one of the authors I could recommend, who deal with those kind of topics, is David Morrell...or Agatha Christie....both are brilliant and both deal with lots of mystery, suspension, upheavals....I used to read Sheldon too, and I loved his books...
besides these, there are numerous great books I could recommend, which not necessarily deal with Sheldon-style

one of my all time favourites is "The Picture of Dorian Gray" - Oscar Wilde...I could read that one over and over again...and also, it's an easy reader, so it would suit perfectly if you are trying to practice/improve your English...

some other authors I love: Haruki Murakami, Patrick Suskind, Bernhard Schlink, Niccollo Ammaniti, Raymond Carver, Charles Bukowski, Arthur Miller etc....

I think you would like works of Harold Robins too.

Though if you want to improve your English, I suggest that you read David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. It is a very long novel but if you are able to read through the initial pages, which you may find boring (as is the case with all good books), the story will grow on you.

I found a marked improvement in my language after I had completed this book.

I think you must always read a book/story twice--first time to know the story and second time cocentrating more on new words and usage.

I hope this helps. All the best :)

One of my favorite novels is The Last of the Breed by Louis Lamoure, by no means is it a classic, but I always enjoy it.

They might not be to your taste, but if you want books which will help you with your English and on occasion make you laugh out loud, I can recommend the DiscWorld Series of novels by Terry Pratchett.

that's the ones that spring to my mind first

classics:
Mikhail Bulgakov "Master and Margherita" (a perfect argument against Nain's statement on "good books", by the way ;) )
William Golding "Lord of the Flies"
Vladimir Nabokov (and that's not only "Lolita"...)

easy/not difficult reading:
Nick Hornby (everything; I liked "High fidelity" the most)
Mark Haddon "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time"
Kurt Vonnegut
John Irving
Yann Martel "Life of Pi"

I love crime stories.

My favourite thrillers: Val McDermid and Joy Fielding. Many more but these are outstanding.

I read "The mermaids singing" in one night! It was fascinating. I also thought that this Val was a man. However can a woman think of such horrendous tortures?

I love crime stories (I'd rather go without sweets than without a book by one of my favourite writers)

My favourite authors are Joy Fielding , Mary Higgins Clark , Minette Walters , David Morrell or Phillip Margolin ,to name only a few.
If you do not mind body parts cropping up now and then and a pool of blood on every other page you might also enjoy forensic thrillers by Patricia Cornwell and Tess Gerritsen.

Hello.

I'll happily endorse the recommendation for Terry Pratchett, Phillip K. Dick, Oscar Wilde and quite a few others.

I would add 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins, any of the 'Inspector Rebus' novels by Ian Rankin and I would point you in the direction of two sites that you may enjoy exploring further.

First, have a look in the 'Cafe Society' forum of The Straight Dope Front Page where they discuss arts and entertainment. Literature and writing have a number of threads there.

From the Straight Dope, I was pointed to Goodreads | get book recommendations from people you know where there is a Straight Dope 'Book Club'. There you will find a number of avid readers who have a diverse range of titles they have selected as their book lists. Enjoy!

I'll try and add some more as time allows if it is of any help.

Cheers.
