I am wondering if my sentence is correct. Is it correct to begin it as I did or do I need to start with "Because he was surrounded by large..."?

Surrounded by large supermarkets, Bob had to close his little shop.

It was the shop, not Bob, that was surrounded by the supermarkets.

Surrounded by large supermarkets, Bob's [STRIKE]had to close his[/STRIKE] little shop couldn't survive the competition and had to close (down).

Though I am not sure if this actually makes a big difference. Whether Bob or his shop is surrounded by large supermarkets, the meaning is still quite transparent. Perhaps, not strictly grammatical but the sentence is not an immediate eyesore.
