Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence from Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men"?

The old swamper looked quickly at him, and then shuffled to the door rubbing his whiskers with his knuckles as he went.

swamper = a helper, as in a restaurant; cleaner

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

Hi, Vil!

You are correct. A 'swamper' in this context is a helper or handyman.
