It means that as opposed to the kind of 'blurring', the muting of the components of a picture as in Impressionistic paintings, objects/components of a painting (or a movie, as in Film Noir) are rendered with a stark, sharp, angled quality. None of your fluffy clouds and diaphanous billowy materials!
