I used to have an English teacher who offered me to memorize a lot of synonyms and antonyms for every single word .he also told me I should learn all the meanings every word has,and he himself memorized them all and used lots of formal words in his speaking.do you agree with him?

No. Certainly he was on the wrong side. Learnign English, in that sense any other language, should be a matter of fun. You should have your natural flow and pace while learning any language. Memorizing more words is the worst habit that One should avoid while learning a new language.

When you were learning your native language you learned a new word by learning how people used that word. I recommend that to learn a new word you practice using it in sentences. The more practice the better.

It is helpful when learning a new word to learn its synonyms, but what if you don't know any of the synonyms? (That is my situation regarding Spanish. You could tell me wht synonnyms of a word, but they would have no meaning to me.)

I don't agree that memorizing is a bad habit. Those who have mastered a foreign language really memorized a lot of words. There is not so many years in our life. Without memorizing one may spend the whole life and may not succeed. Your problem is that you don't have enough motivation. And your teacher force you. If you are able to memorize 500 new words in a year, you have a good teacher.

:-D I do agree that one must memorize all the words that you don´t know yet and of course put them in practice. It is a must so that you can have a very wide range of vocabularies and not be repeating again and again the same word. One should take this as something so enriching!!!
