When do you use 'equal' and when do you use 'equivalent'?
Is there a difference?

"Equal" - being the same in quantity, size, degree, value, or status

Their salaries are equal; they both earn a million dollars a year.
Those apples are equal in size.


"Equivalent" = having the same amount, value, purpose, qualities

Their salaries (including all their expenses) are equivalent to receiving a million dollars a year.
An apple is not equivalent to an orange.
