Tax free or tax-free?

I cannot find an established style for tax free? Is it hypenated? Is it hyphenated only before the noun or both before and after the noun?

If it is used as an adjective before a noun, I would hyphenate it. If it is a predicate adjective, I would not.

John received a tax-free grant for college tuition.
John's lottery winnings were tax free.

Yes, that would have been my judgment. Somebody could make a buck with a booklet with just hyphenization. But the general rule applies here, I see.
