Question: In the following paragraph, what are the two sides that are involved in the tension? In other words, what are the effects produced by the tensions? I asked this because I feel, even in a metaphoric use, the word "tensions" still involves two sides, like one pulling one, the other pulling oppositely. Otherwise I don't see tensions. So what are the two sides in this case?
"Global warming will bring hurricanes far more severe than Katrina and will cause natural climate-control mechanisms to go wrong. Rising temperatures will lower crop yields in many of the world’s poorest countries. The immense tensions 12 brought about by such catastrophes will occur in a time of extremism, religious belligerence and suicidal terrorism, and this will coincide with terrible weapons becoming much less expensive and more widely available.
