'babe' is used in at least two ways to describe girls/women; individually, as a personal term of endearment,

"Sure babe, you can watch some TV now."

or as a description of a group of "hot" ladies.

"Whoa, what a bunch of babes!"

I've heard 'babe' used often for men, as a personal term of endearment by their partner or good friend but generally, I'd that that it isn't used for men.

"Babe" when used between two men is often very Hollywood fake-ish, and sounds fairly pretentious and insincere.

For men, words like "dude," "buddy," "bud" or "pal" work well as terms of endearment.
